Antique (1918) Hamilton working player piano donated for Genoa Schoolhouse

An outstanding period instrument in excellent condition was recently acquired* by the Perry Township History Club, Inc. As far back as we all can recall, schools had music instruction. In the 1920′s, Genoa School began serving a a congregation which eventually became what is now Trinity United Methodist Church, Lincoln Way, east of Genoa Ave. If any family has wedding or other photos from the old school/church, please contact someone from the club. It’s been reported that as a “reformed” church, the worshipers sat on the north and south sides of the building, half for all men and the other half for all women. The children were seated in the front and the teens met for Sunday School in the basement which featured a dirt floor useable in wet weather by walking on wood planks on the muddy ground.

*Mr. John Arcadian’s grandfather was a carpenter and worked on musical instruments, hence this instrument being in pristine condition. John is pleased that the family piano will bring enjoyment to Perry residents and visitors for years to come. He included numerous player piano rolls, also in very good condition. While John could have sold this expensive piece, he chose aesthetic preservation.

The piano is being provided a good, temporary home with Dr. Warren and Lora Norton who live in a recently restored Victorian mansion in SW Massillon … THANK YOU, Nortons!

Here’s the scoop: club member Paul Jackson found this piano listed for free in the antiques section of Craig’slist. Wow!

Authentic school desks finally have storage home for Genoa Schoolhouse!

The Perry Township History Club, Inc. now has the good fortune of storage garages available at PERRY STORAGE, INC. Leslie Riley – Manager. History Club items donated, including numerous student desks, don’t have to be shuffled around in private garages, etc. any more – HURRAH! and THANK YOU, Leslie!

In the spring of 2011, Perry High School ART STUDENTS painted in competition a “winter scene” of the old school. Members of the Perry History Club selected a winner: MEREDITH MANN, a Junior … CONGRATULATIONS! The Perry H.S. Art Department Chair and Instructor Mrs. Susan Rusu directed this project. THANK YOU!

THANK – YOU to the many donors and especially WORKERS! $1000 was designated toward the 1893 Genoa Schoolhouse. Remaining proceeds assist with club operational expenses. We had U.S. 30 fans from near and far visit our sale; local vendors wanted in 2012!

The 44-Star Flag: This Flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th, 1891. A star was added for the admission of Wyoming (July 10, 1890) and was to last for 5 years. The Presidents to serve under this flag were Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893) and Grover Cleveland (1893-1897)
